Phyllis Barkhurst, M. Ed.

Over a 30-year career, Phyllis Barkhurst has been the founding executive director of three different Oregon nonprofit organizations addressing child abuse, sexual assault, elder abuse, and/or domestic violence intervention and prevention - including Klamath Crisis Center in Klamath Falls, Sexual Assault Support Services (SASS) in Lane County, and the Oregon Attorney General's Sexual Assault Task Force (statewide). In Lane County, Ms. Barkhurst was also a founding member of the Domestic Violence Council and the Legal Clinic for survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking.

As part of the Attorney General's Sexual Assault Task Force, Ms. Barkhurst led the founding of Oregon's Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) program and the Sexual Assault Training Institute. She co-drafted and spearheaded the passage of several key pieces of legislation supporting and protecting crime victims, and co-founded the Oregon Alliance to End Violence Against Women in 1999. In recognition of her leadership and advocacy on behalf of victims of abuse, Ms. Barkhurst has received awards from the Oregon Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence, the Oregon District Attorneys Association, and the Oregon Department of Justice, among others.

Ms. Barkhurst is a past president and 10-year board member of the Oregon Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence and has served in a leadership capacity on numerous boards and committees dedicated to reducing violence against women, children, and others. She was the co-author of Oregon's first Sexual Assault Prevention Plan.

In 2011, Ms. Barkhurst joined the 90by30 effort as a consultant, and was hired as its director in May 2012. She became the Co-Director of the Center for the Prevention of Abuse and Neglect in April 2015. Also in 2015, she received her Master's degree in Prevention Science from the University of Oregon. Currently, she manages and raises funds for 90by30, manages the Stewards of Children evaluation project, and serves as a member of the Oregon Prevalence Study research team.
