October 14 marked the fifth year of the 90by30 Annual Conference, a chance for community members to come together and rededicate themselves to the goal of reducing child abuse in Lane County 90 percent by 2030. This year, we were honored to have Mary Gordon, founder and director of Roots of Empathy, as the keynote speaker. Gordon's evidence-based program increases empathy in elementary school children by bringing an infant and caregiver, along with a Roots of Empathy faciliator, into the classroom for multiple visits over the course of a year. Later this summer in south Lane County when some happy, yet weary new parents lay their little one down for a nap, it won’t be a crib or a bassinet that they place the baby in. It will be a box. Baby boxes have been considered a safe sleep system in Finland for nearly 40 years. The state of New Jersey began giving away this version of a bassinet in January. And south Lane County is next. Mark your calendars - 90by30 has scheduled its fifth annual Conference for October 14 at Lane Community College's Center for Meeting and Learning. The keynote speaker will be Mary Gordon, founder and president of Roots of Empathy , a program that has caught the attention of many regions as a potential prevention strategy. Workshops on equity and inclusion, a first look at the countywide Play Your Part campaign, and presentations of each region's prevention plan will round out the day. 90by30 Hosts Community Baby Shower in Cottage Grove

A family resource center, 90by30, is working with Pip and Grow to unveil the Welcome Baby Box project. Organizers said baby boxes lower the risk of sudden infant death syndrome or SIDS. The project will also provide new parents with essentials. The baby shower will take place on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Bohemia Park. Families can also register for the baby boxes. They will be available to all infants born in south Lane County starting in August.
